St. Francis Medical Center is pleased to welcome Desert Trauma Surgeons, Inc. (DTS) and its team of specialists to the hospital’s trauma program. DTS is partnering with St. Francis to provide the professional services for the hospital’s Level II trauma center, effective January 1, 2022. With onboarding complete, DTS’ Aaron Strumwasser, M.D., and Bryan Love, M.D., are serving as trauma director and associate trauma director, respectively, and will help to lead St. Francis Medical Center’s trauma program going forward.

Desert Trauma Surgeons has been providing quality trauma care to the entire Coachella Valley for over 30 years, making it uniquely positioned to advance St. Francis Medical Center’s renowned trauma program, which was launched in 1996.

St. Francis Medical Center interim CEO Kristin Christophersen said, “Desert Trauma Surgeons will further promote the development of our trauma center. They possess both the medical expertise and operational insight necessary to maintain the highest level of trauma care capability and organizational performance and ensure optimal care for sick and injured patients.”

Dr. Strumwasser expressed DTS’ mutual enthusiasm upon joining St. Francis. He stated, “Desert Trauma Surgeons’ physicians and staff are a dedicated and motivated team who look forward to integrating into St. Francis’ coordinated system of care. They are excited about the opportunity to continue the hospital’s quality of care and to take St. Francis Medical Center to the next tier of trauma services delivery.”

St. Francis is located in one of the most densely populated communities in Southern California. Its trauma center is one of the busiest Level II centers in Los Angeles County, with a penetrating trauma volume that is consistently among the highest. Based on an average of the last five years, the hospital’s trauma center treats more than 2,300 trauma patients annually.

Christophersen said St. Francis and DTS will maintain the hospital’s key role in the Los Angeles County Trauma Network, providing dependable 24-hour care to all of L.A. County. She stated, “The partnership we have established with Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services and with the many other agencies that support the Trauma Network will remain robust and strengthened by the shared commitment DTS and we have to providing the highest level of trauma care to our community.”
