New Grade for Fall 2024 is a national recognition for commitment to patient safety
St. Francis Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
“We are very proud of this top-tier achievement for hospital safety,” said St. Francis CEO Clay Farell. “Safe care is the cornerstone for better medical outcomes, shorter hospital stays and reduced readmissions. It is a priority at St. Francis, and no team works harder or is more committed to delivering consistent, safe, high-quality care.”
Over the last year, 85 percent of Prime hospitals earned “A” ratings from The Leapfrog Group.
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for St. Francis Medical Center,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to patients and their families, and the whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to St. Francis, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
In addition to the Leapfrog recognition, St. Francis Medical Center is the recipient of a 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ and numerous clinical excellence awards from Healthgrades, an “A” for Patient Safety on the Lown Institute Hospitals Index, and a Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award from the American Heart Association, acknowledging the commitment the hospital places on creating a culture of safety for both patients and staff while delivering exceptional care.
“St. Francis maintains a robust and comprehensive program of quality and safety,” said St. Francis Chief Medical Officer, Anantjit Singh, MD. “Safe medication administration, infection prevention, falls prevention, hand hygiene and antibiotic stewardship are among the processes physicians and staff practice with aligned focus across the hospital to maximize safety and healthcare outcomes for every patient.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program concentrated solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
